Kenya CMA Eyes Blockchain Tool to Monitor Crypto Transactions
Kenya CMA plans blockchain tracking tools to monitor crypto transactions across 20+ networks.
The platform will detect risky wallets, suspicious transfers, and potential financial crimes.
New virtual asset rules push Kenya toward stronger crypto market supervision.
Kenya’s Capital Markets Authority (CMA) is seeking a blockchain analytics platform to strengthen crypto oversight as the country prepares to regulate virtual asset service providers. The proposed system will help track digital asset activity, identify suspicious transactions, and improve enforcement under Kenya’s new virtual assets framework.
CMA Plans Advanced Crypto Monitoring System
According to a review by Capital FM Africa, the CMA is seeking a blockchain surveillance platform that can track transactions across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and more than 20 other networks.
The system will enable real-time monitoring, historical analysis, and deeper investigations into suspicious digital asset activity.
Tender documents show that the platform will strengthen compliance oversight by helping the regulator investigate crypto-related risks and supervise licensed virtual asset service providers.
Additionally, the technology will help the regulator oversee exchanges, brokers, asset managers, investment advisers, and tokenization platforms.
The proposed solution will generate automated alerts involving high-risk wallets, unusually large transfers, cryptocurrency mixers, darknet-linked addresses, and sanctioned entities. Therefore, the CMA will gain improved capabilities to detect potential financial crimes within Kenya’s growing crypto market.
The platform will also provide investigative features, including wallet relationship mapping, transaction timeline reconstruction, and cross-chain fund tracing. Moreover, the system will assign risk scores to wallets and transactions based on indicators linked to fraud, money laundering, ransomware, and terrorism financing.
Through these tools, the regulator aims to identify connections between blockchain addresses and known exchanges, decentralised finance platforms, over-the-counter trading services, and suspected criminal networks. This approach could improve visibility into digital asset movements across multiple ecosystems.
New Crypto Rules Drive Kenya’s Regulatory Expansion
The blockchain analytics initiative follows Kenya’s introduction of the Virtual Assets Service Providers Act, which created a formal regulatory structure for digital assets.
President William Ruto signed the legislation into law in October, with implementation beginning the following month.
Under the framework, regulatory responsibilities are divided between the Central Bank of Kenya and the CMA. The central bank oversees payment-related crypto services, stablecoins, and custodial wallet providers, while the CMA supervises exchanges, brokers, advisers, and tokenization platforms.
However, no crypto companies have received licences under the new framework so far. Existing virtual asset operators are expected to meet compliance requirements by November 2026 as authorities continue developing implementation guidelines.
The CMA’s move reflects a broader global shift toward blockchain monitoring among regulators. Similar analytics platforms are used internationally to investigate illicit transactions and support anti-money laundering efforts.
Kenya remains one of Africa’s largest cryptocurrency markets. Data from Chainalysis estimated that Kenyan users received approximately $19 billion in crypto assets between July 2024 and June 2025.
The planned blockchain tool signals Kenya’s effort to strengthen market supervision while creating a more transparent environment for regulated digital asset activity.
